Table Grapes

Harvesting and
Post-Harvest Handling

Table grapes do not ripen after they have been picked, so they need to be harvested at optimum ripeness. Harvesting is done during the cool conditions before or around sunrise. Our pickers take great care to prevent bruising the berries, as this will compromise export quality. Grapes are quickly transported to modern, on-site packhouses, where they are graded, packed, and precooled within hours of picking.

Our Markets

NGC exports to leading retailers and fresh produce importers in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. As our grapes are usually some of the first “new season” grapes to arrive in the markets from Southern Africa, they are eagerly awaited and received with enthusiasm by our receivers. Our grapes are trusted by supermarket chains, wholesale distributors, and niche fruit suppliers who rely on early, high-quality fruit to meet customer demand during the Northern Hemisphere winter.

Cold Chain
Management

Maintaining the cold chain is essential to preserving quality. Once cooled, grapes are transported via refrigerated containers to the Port of Walvis Bay in Namibia , Port of Cape Town and Durban port in South Africa for export. From harvest to arrival, every step is managed with precision to prevent temperature breaks that could shorten shelf life. This attention to detail is what ensures our grapes consistently arrive in top condition – fresh, firm, and ready for market.

Quality assurance

At NGC, quality assurance is a cornerstone of operations, ensuring that all grapes meet the highest standards required by international markets. The company employs its own dedicated Quality Control (QC) personnel, who oversee and monitor quality throughout the production and harvesting process. To further strengthen this commitment, an independent external quality control team is brought in every season to work alongside the internal QC team. This dual-layered approach helps eliminate any potential bias or oversight and reinforces consistency in quality across all farms. In addition to internal and external QC teams, inspectors from the Namibia Agronomic Board (NAB)—a government regulatory body—are present on-site during harvest. They conduct inspections and have the authority to pass or reject fruit intended for export, ensuring compliance with national and international standards. Furthermore, cultivar breeders and representatives from major supermarket chains routinely visit the farms to provide guidance and monitor fruit quality, ensuring it aligns with their specific market requirements. This multi-tiered approach to quality assurance reflects NGC’s unwavering commitment to excellence, food safety, and customer satisfaction.
